What is Glenmorangie?

The whisky from Scotland's tallest stills

Glenmorangie (pronounced: glen-MOR-en-djie) is a single malt whisky from Tain, a small town on the Dornoch Firth in the northern Highlands of Scotland. The distillery has been operating since 1843. Its best-known feature is inside: the copper stills are the tallest in Scotland. The taller the still, the fewer heavy compounds the vapor carries upward. As a result, Glenmorangie is light, soft and fruity, with notes of orange, peach and vanilla.

Glenmorangie does not use peated barley for its regular whiskies, so there is hardly any smoke. The distillery is known for its work with casks. The core expression matures in ex-bourbon casks made of American oak. Many bottles then receive additional maturation in casks that previously held port, sherry or sweet wine. Glenmorangie was one of the first distilleries to make this a permanent part of its range. The brand has been owned by Moët Hennessy since 2004, just like Ardbeg on Islay.

How to drink it

Three ways to drink Glenmorangie

Glenmorangie is smooth enough to drink neat, even if you are just starting out with whisky. A drop of water makes it even fruitier.

Neat, with a drop of water

Pour 30 ml into a tulip-shaped tasting glass and let it sit for a few minutes. Smell it first, then take a small sip. A few drops of water bring out the fruit and flowers.

Highball

The Original works well as a highball: pour 40 ml of whisky over plenty of ice in a tall glass and top up with cold sparkling water or ginger ale. Light, refreshing and delicious with drinks and snacks.

To the highball →

On the rocks

With one large ice cube in a tumbler, the whisky stays cool without diluting quickly. Cold suppresses the aromas somewhat, so it is better to drink the more expensive bottles neat.
