What is Dewar's?

A blend that matures twice

Dewar's is a blended Scotch whisky. The company began in 1846, when John Dewar opened a wine and spirits shop in the Scottish city of Perth. His sons John and Tommy turned it into an international brand. Tommy Dewar travelled the world to sell the whisky, including in America, where Dewar's remains one of the best-known Scotch brands.

A blend is a mixture of single malts and grain whisky from different distilleries. At the heart of Dewar's is Aberfeldy malt, from a distillery in the Highlands that the Dewar family had built at the end of the nineteenth century. A defining feature is the double maturation: after blending, the blend returns to oak casks so the whiskies can integrate more fully. This makes Dewar's smooth and rounded. The brand has been part of Bacardi since 1998.

How to drink it

Three ways to drink Dewar's

Dewar's is made to be versatile. Neat is perfectly fine, but in America and Japan, the highball, whisky with ice and soda water, is the most popular way to drink it.

Highball

Fill a highball glass with ice, pour in 50 ml of Dewar's 12 Years of Japanese Smooth, and top up with 100 to 150 ml of cold soda water. Stir gently once, optionally adding a lemon twist.

On the rocks

One large ice cube in a heavy tumbler. The cold makes the whisky fresher and smoother without diluting it too quickly.

Glass: tumbler →

Neat

Drink the Double Double bottles neat, at room temperature, from a tasting glass. This lets you taste the layers of the long maturation.

What percentage of alcohol is in Dewar's?
Dewar's 12 Years and the 8 Years bottles (Japanese Smooth and French Smooth) are 40% ABV. The 21-, 27-, and 32-year-old Double Double blends are bottled at 46% ABV.
Is Dewar's a single malt?
No. Dewar's is a blended Scotch: a mixture of different single malts and grain whisky. The main malt in the blend comes from Aberfeldy, a distillery that the Dewar family had built themselves.
What is double ageing at Dewar's?
After blending, the blend goes back into oak casks to mature together for a while longer. This allows the different whiskies to meld better and makes the flavor smoother. With the Double Double range, this happens in four steps.
How do you pronounce Dewar's?
Approximately like 'DJOOR-ers', with the emphasis on the first syllable. The name comes from founder John Dewar.
How do you make a whisky highball?
Fill a tall glass to the rim with ice, pour in 50 ml of whisky, and top up with cold soda water at a ratio of approximately 1 to 3. Stir gently once. A strip of lemon zest makes it extra refreshing.
Which glass do you use for Dewar's?
For a highball, use a tall highball glass; for on the rocks, a heavy tumbler; and for neat tasting, a tulip-shaped tasting glass.
