Takamaka
Takamaka is rum from the Seychelles, the archipelago in the Indian Ocean. Tropical fruit, vanilla and local spices, from the soft Zenn to the spicy Zepis Kreol and a 69% overproof.
Rum from the Indian Ocean
Takamaka comes from the Seychelles, an archipelago in the Indian Ocean northeast of Madagascar. The rum is made on Mahé, the largest island. The name comes from the takamaka tree, which you can see all along the coast of the Seychelles. Almost every bottle bears a name in Seychellois Creole, the language of the islands: Zenn, Zepis Kreol, Zannannan and Koko.
Most well-known rum comes from the Caribbean. Rum from the Indian Ocean is less familiar. Takamaka has a character of its own: plenty of tropical fruit, such as banana and pineapple, along with vanilla and local spices such as cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. Takamaka makes both rum for mixing and rum for drinking neat, as well as a few sweet rum liqueurs. Extra Noir is a blend of column-still and pot-still distillate, first pressed through ex-bourbon wood and then aged for sixty days in French casks.
In brief
Seven bottles of Takamaka
Gall & Gall sells seven types of Takamaka: four rums, one spiced rum and two rum liqueurs. Pay attention to the percentage for the Overproof.

Takamaka Zenn
Round, approachable rum, pressed through ex-bourbon wood. Toffee, dried fruit and a light touch of oak. Delicious neat, but at its best in cocktails.

Takamaka Extra Noir
Blend of column- and pot-still rum, pressed through ex-bourbon wood and aged for sixty days in French casks. Rich and spicy, with oak, pineapple and caramel.

Takamaka Zepis Kreol
Zepis Kreol means Creole spices. Rich and spicy, thanks to wood and local spices such as cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon.

Takamaka Dark Spiced
Takamaka White Rum with a macerate of papaya, vanilla and tropical spices. Lightly grassy, with papaya, caramel and vanilla.

Takamaka Overproof
Powerful rum with banana, pineapple, vanilla and pepper. At 69% alcohol, it is not for drinking neat; use a small splash as a finishing touch in a cocktail.

Takamaka Zannannan
Zannannan means pineapple in Creole. Rum Blanc with pure pineapple extract: creamy and tropical.

Takamaka Koko
Rum Blanc with pure coconut extract. Creamy and tropical, and an easy base for coconut drinks.

Flavor profile of Takamaka Extra Noir. Zenn is smoother, Zepis Kreol spicier, and the rum liqueurs are sweet, around 4.
Three ways to drink Takamaka
Drink Extra Noir and Zepis Kreol neat or over ice. Zenn, Dark Spiced and the liqueurs are made for the shaker and the highball glass.
Neat or over ice
Pour 4 cl Extra Noir or Zepis Kreol into a tumbler, with one large ice cube or neat. A twist of orange brings out the spices.
Glass: tumbler →With ginger beer or cola
Pour 5 cl Dark Spiced or Zenn over plenty of ice in a tall glass, top up with ginger beer and add a lime wedge. With cola, it becomes a Cuba Libre.
About ginger beer →In a Piña Colada
Shake 4 cl Zannannan or Koko with 2 cl Zenn, 10 cl pineapple juice and 3 cl coconut cream with ice. Because of the liqueur, you need less additional coconut or sugar.
