Armand de Brignac
The champagne in the golden metallic bottle with the ace of spades on it, better known as Ace of Spades. What is in that bottle, how the four varieties differ and how best to serve them.
The champagne behind the ace of spades
Armand de Brignac is a champagne brand that you mainly recognize by the bottle: gold, silver or pink, with a shiny metallic finish and a tin label shaped like the ace of spades. That is why the champagne is popularly known as Ace of Spades. The bottle appeared in music videos and clubs, and rapper Jay-Z became the brand's owner. Today, Moët Hennessy is a co-owner with a 50% stake.
Behind that appearance is a champagne from an old winemaking family: the Cattier family from Chigny-les-Roses, a village in the Montagne de Reims. They make the wines. A defining feature is that Armand de Brignac makes its non-vintage cuvées from three different harvests, which the house calls multi-vintage. Brut Gold consists of equal amounts of pinot noir and pinot meunier, supplemented with chardonnay. The result is a rich, round style with plenty of fruit.
In brief
Four Armand de Brignac bottles at Gall & Gall
All four are 12.5% and are made from a blend of vintages. The color of the bottle immediately tells you which style you have.

Brut Gold
The brand's icon: 40% pinot noir, 40% pinot meunier and 20% chardonnay. Ripe fruit such as peach and apricot, with brioche.

Rosé
A rosé with depth, featuring raspberry, brioche and apricot. The color comes from a small amount of still red wine made from pinot noir, approximately 15%.

Blanc de Blancs
Chardonnay only, from the Côte des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims. The brand's most precise and freshest bottle.

Demi-Sec
The brand's sweeter champagne, with yellow apple, grapefruit, brioche and honey. Luxurious and round.

Ripe fruit, brioche and creamy bubbles
Peach & brioche
Ripe peach and apricot, some citrus and white flowers, underpinned by brioche and toasted bread. The rosé smells of raspberry and red berries.
Rich and round
The pinot noir and pinot meunier make the Brut Gold feel full and round. The bubbles are fine and creamy. The Blanc de Blancs is leaner and fresher.
Long and fruity
A long finish with fruit and a soft, slightly nutty note. The Demi-Sec finishes sweet, with honey.
Flavor profile of the Brut Gold. The Demi-Sec scores much higher on sweetness, while the Blanc de Blancs is higher in freshness.
How to pour Armand de Brignac
Chill the bottle to 8 to 10 degrees. Because of the metallic bottle, you can't see how much is left, so pour slowly and look in the glass.
Neat in a tulip glass
Pour along the side of a tilted glass and fill it to about two-thirds. A tulip-shaped glass retains the bubbles and lets you smell the ripe fruit clearly. A 75 cl bottle yields about five glasses.
Glass: tulip or flute →Rosé and Blanc de Blancs at the table
The Rosé pairs well with salmon, duck or a dish with red fruit. The Blanc de Blancs is crisper and goes with oysters, scallops or white fish. Serve them in a spacious glass so you can appreciate the aromas.
More about wine and food pairings →Demi-Sec with dessert
The Demi-Sec is sweet enough to accompany dessert. Choose something less sweet than the champagne, such as a fruit tart or lemon tart. It also works well with foie gras or blue cheese.
