What is Philipponnat?

A pinot noir house on the Marne

Philipponnat is a champagne house in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, a village on the Marne right next to Aÿ. This part of Champagne is known for its pinot noir, the dark-skinned grape that gives champagne power and volume. The Philipponnat family has lived and worked in the region for centuries, and Charles Philipponnat now runs the house. As a result, the champagnes are typical of the place: full, rounded and rich, with red fruit and toasted notes.

The flagship is Clos des Goisses, a walled vineyard right on the Marne Canal. The vineyard faces south and is so steep that the slope reaches almost 45 degrees in some places. Because of its location, the grapes receive plenty of sunlight and become extra ripe. Clos des Goisses is one of the best-known single-vineyard champagnes. Philipponnat also produces a non-vintage brut, a blanc de noirs and, under a separate label, the lighter champagnes of De Saint Marceaux.

What does Philipponnat taste like?

Red fruit, toast, and a full palate

Nose

Raspberry & toast

Red fruit such as raspberry and cherry, lemon and honey, with toasted bread and brioche underneath. Clos des Goisses also has dried fruit and nuts.

Palate

Full and round

With its high proportion of pinot noir, Philipponnat feels broader and fuller than a champagne with a lot of chardonnay. The bubbles are fine and creamy.

Finish

Long and dry

A dry finish with fruit and a slight bitterness of toasted bread. The vintage bottles linger for a long time.

Sweet 1/5
Fresh 3/5
Fruity 4/5
Powerful 4/5

Flavor profile of the Royale Réserve Brut. The Saint Marceaux is lighter and fresher, while Clos des Goisses is even more powerful.

How to drink it

How to pour Philipponnat

Chill the brut to 8 to 10 degrees. The Blanc de Noirs and Clos des Goisses can be served slightly warmer, around 10 to 12 degrees, so you can taste their richness.

Brut as an aperitif

Slowly pour the Royale Réserve down the side of a tilted glass and fill it two-thirds full. Thanks to the pinot noir, it also pairs well with savory snacks, such as ham, sausage, or a piece of aged cheese.

Glass: tulip or flute →

Clos des Goisses in a large glass

Treat this champagne like a great white wine. Pour it into a spacious wine glass and let it warm up a little. Then it opens up and the ripe, nutty notes come to the fore.

Magnum for a party

A magnum yields about ten glasses. Put the bottle in the refrigerator a few hours in advance, or in a bucket with ice and water for an hour. Champagne ages more slowly in a magnum, and many connoisseurs therefore find it more beautiful.

What percentage of alcohol is in Philipponnat?
Most Philipponnat bottles are between 12 and 12.5%. At 13%, Clos des Goisses 2013 is the strongest, thanks to the extra-ripe grapes from the sunny slope.
Where does Philipponnat come from?
From Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, a village on the Marne next to Aÿ, in the part of Champagne known for pinot noir. The Philipponnat family has been active in the region for centuries.
What is Clos des Goisses?
A walled vineyard owned by Philipponnat along the Marne Canal near Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. It faces south, on a slope that is nearly 45 degrees steep in some places. The grapes ripen extra well there, and the champagne made from them is considered one of the greatest in the region.
What does blanc de noirs mean?
Blanc de noirs is white champagne made from dark-skinned grapes, usually pinot noir and sometimes pinot meunier. The juice from these grapes is colorless; only the skin is dark. That is why you can make white champagne from them. A blanc de noirs is often fuller and more powerful than an ordinary brut.
What is De Saint Marceaux?
De Saint Marceaux is a separate champagne label associated with Philipponnat. The champagnes are lighter and fruitier, with pear, apple, and lemon, and are in a lower price range. Handy for a party or in cocktails.
Which glass do you use for Philipponnat?
A tulip-shaped champagne glass for the Royale Réserve. For the Blanc de Noirs and especially for Clos des Goisses, use a large wine glass so the rich aroma has room to develop. A flute is fine for the toast.
