What is Frangelico?

Hazelnuts from Piedmont, in a monk's habit

Frangelico is a hazelnut-based liqueur. It comes from Canale, in the Italian region of Piedmont, an area known for its hazelnuts. In addition to nuts, it contains cocoa and vanilla. This gives it a smooth and sweet taste, a little like a praline. The liqueur has an alcohol content of 20% and a golden-brown color.

The name and the bottle belong together. According to the maker, the name goes back to a legend about Fra Angelico, a hermit in Piedmont who made liqueurs. That is why the bottle is shaped like a monk in a habit, with a real cord as a belt. Frangelico came onto the market in 1978 and is now part of the Italian Campari Group.

Finish

A smooth finish in which the hazelnut lingers for a moment. At 20% ABV, it is mild.

Sweet 4/5
Nutty 5/5
Fruity 1/5
Strength 2/5

Flavor profile of Frangelico at 20% ABV. With ice and lime, it becomes fresher and less sweet.

How to drink it

Three ways to drink Frangelico

Frangelico is sweet enough to drink neat, but ice, coffee, or a touch of acidity brings out the hazelnut even more.

On the rocks with lime

Fill a tumbler with ice, pour in 5 cl of Frangelico, and squeeze a lime wedge over it. The acidity cuts through the sweetness and lets the nutty flavor shine.
